The Sloan Census Return 1901

On the Census Return for 11 Crane Court we see our grandfather Robert Alexander Sloan was the eldest of 8 children.

The Census for 11 Crane Court has been filled in and signed by the Head of Family, Charles Sloan, aged 40, occupation “car driver” and place of birth Co Antrim.

His wife is Mary C Sloan, also aged 40, with place of birth England.

Robert Alexander Sloan aged 19, is the eldest of eight children, occupation “car driver”, and place of birth England.

Sarah Elizabeth is 16, occupation “Winder”, born Co Antrim.

The remaining six children are  “Scholars” born in Co Antrim.

They are Charles aged 12, James aged 10, William John aged 8, Margaret Ann aged 6, Mary aged 4 and George aged 1.

From this information we can tell that our great grandfather Charles Sloan was born in Co Antrim but at some stage moved to England.

In England he meet and married an English girl called “Mary C”, our great grandmother.

Their first child, Robert Alexander was born in England but they must have moved back to Belfast before he turned 3 as their next child, Sarah Elizabeth, was born in Co Antrim.

My next step was to try and find the marriage certificate of our Great Grandparents - Charles and Mary C Sloan.
